Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38 ("Spring), Overture, Scherzo and Finale in E major, Op. 52, Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120 (first version, 1841)
“This CD initiates a comprehensive series of recordings of all orchestral works by Robert Schumann with the WDR Sinfonieorchester [Symphony Orchestra Cologne] conducted by Heinz Holliger. The series encompasses all symphonies (including both versions of the Fourth Symphony), as well as all overtures and concertos. Holliger’s interpretations are based on his nearly lifelong preoccupation with the work, thought, personality and destiny of Robert Schumann. Holliger’s approach confers transparency and lightness to the opulent scores by means of a hierarchical balancing of voices, finely graduated dynamics, and fresh tempi. The widespread image of this Romantic as a weak orchestrator thus undergoes a refreshing and well-founded correction.”
